Tailor Made Sleeve implant to prevent aortic enlargement for people with Marfan Syndrome
About the inventor
Tal Golesworthy is an engineer suffering from a genetic disease called Marfan Syndrome. These diseases affect the conjunctive tissue that holds the organs together. One of the most life threatening effects of this syndrome is the continuous enlargement of the aorta, which can be life threatening it if burst.
Tal suffered from aortic enlargement and when seeking treatment he realized that traditional surgery would significantly reduce his quality of life. The surgery was very invasive and it would require the patient to take anti-clotting medicine for the rest of his life.
About the project
Not prepared to deal with this he decided to take the matter into his own hands and with the help of a team of surgeons he designed a less invasive tailor made sleeve implant that would in theory prevent further aortic enlargement. Tal became the first patient to undergone this new surgical procedure and now more than three dozen of patient have undergone the same surgery with good results.
